Snake River Basin Steelhead Fisheries

The Snake River Basin steelhead fisheries are being managed under a new basin-wide framework designed to limit total impacts on steelhead from all fisheries in the Snake River Basin. The framework also includes new low-abundance thresholds that will trigger implementation of additional conservation measures when natural-origin steelhead abundance is projected to fall below threshold levels. This framework was developed in collaboration with all fishery managers in the Snake River Basin.

In considering fishery proposals, NOAA Fisheries evaluates tribal plans under the Tribal 4(d) Rule and state plans under limit 4 of the salmon and steelhead 4(d) Rule.  We also consider impacts of steelhead fishery plans on other ESA-listed species, such as Snake River sockeye and Snake River fall Chinook salmon.  Prior to making a determination, NMFS provides the plans or evaluations for public review and comment.
