Why is the Stranding Network Important?

Every year there are hundreds of reports of stranded marine mammals throughout Washington, Oregon, and California. Each case can hold important information about the species which can contribute to scientific research or public education. Public education can reduce negative interactions between marine mammals and the public and raise awareness of marine life in our communities.

  1. Data establishes baseline information on marine mammal communities and their health.
  2. Increases biological information for research
  3. Safety information and increases awareness
  4. Educate the public about marine mammals and reduces the chances of negative interactions
