Northern Fur Seal Identification Tips

ID: small head, very short snout; fur line on flippers is like a sleeve, hair ends in a clean line at wrist
Size: Males range from 6-7.5 feet and ~ 620 pounds; Females are 3.5 – 5 feet and ~ 120 pounds.
Color: Long fur; males dark brown to black, females dark brown/gray dorsal with lighter throat and chest
Ears: Long ear pinnae
Flippers: Largest hind flippers; Hind and fore flippers are hairless
Claws: Long digits on hind flippers
Genitals: External testes, 1-2 pair of teats
