NMFS released for public comment a Hatchery and Genetic Management Plan (HGMP) from the State of California for its winter steelhead hatchery program in the Mad River of northern California, pursuant to the protective regulations promulgated for Pacific salmon and steelhead under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

NMFS also made available its draft environmental assessment of the effects of approving that steelhead hatchery program.  NMFS solicited comments from the public on both documents, which are available below.

The hatchery program would operate to provide steelhead for harvest in freshwater recreational fisheries in the Mad River. It would propagate steelhead that are derived from the local steelhead population in the Mad River.
