Observer Qualifications

Prospective observers must have at a minimum:

1. A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences.

2.Successfully completed a minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in applicable biological sciences.

3. Successfully completed at least one undergraduate course in math or statistics

4. Experience with data entry on computers.

 

Observer Training

New observers are required to take a two-week training with National Marine Fisheries Service. The course is typically conducted in September or October each year in Long Beach and covers the following topics:

Returning observers are required to complete a refresher training course annually with National Marine Fisheries Service. The course is typically conducted in August and lasts two or three days,
