Willamette Steelhead

The summer steelhead program is managed entirely for fishery augmentation. Recreational fisheries harvest these fish in the lower Columbia River, Willamette River, and Santiam, McKenzie, and Middle Fork Willamette rivers. The program has no conservation or recovery objectives.

Key actions in the Willamette Biological Opinion include adjusting hatchery steelhead releases in the Santiam River to provide the greatest harvest of these fish while reducing impacts to ESA listed winter steelhead, take action to reduce the straying of summer steelhead, reduce the number of summer steelhead smolts that residualize and do not migrate to the ocean (which increases impacts on winter steelhead).
