Pinniped Activities

Pinnipeds include seals, sea lions, and walrus (which we do not have in WA, OR, and CA) and below are some resources that can be incorporated into classroom units. Students will learn strategies to distinguish between different species, where they belong in a food web, and the complex human interactions. With increasing populations of some of these species, we hope to engage our communities in learning more about the life history of these marine mammals and their role in our marine ecosystem. Public attitudes are a major part of the success or failure of conservation efforts and we hope to increase ocean literacy and inspire students to consider careers in marine sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and other disciplines critical to resource management. Below you will find our new units distributed by target audience, however many of these resources can be modified for any age. If you would like to work with our education and outreach team, contact wcr.education@noaa.gov.
